Does my hair make me look old?
Updated: Mar 11
Believe it or not, our hair actually ages much faster than our skin and it can make us look old. Women spend thousands of dollars on anti-aging skin treatments; Botox, fillers, facials, peels, but oftentimes forget to address the needs of their aging hair. Dry, brittle, thinning, its ability to reflect light like it used to compromised, exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays all the time, environmental pollution, chlorine from our water, alcohol from our styling products, rubbing and tugging from our bed pillows - our poor hair gets its butt kicked. If anything deserves some anti-aging love and protection, it's most definitely our hair.
As we grow older our bodies are up against an increasing inability to renew and regenerate cells like they used to when we were younger. Some women experience aging hair and thinning hair at the onset of menopause. Hair begins to appear thin, fine, dry and brittle and is oftentimes coarser than its ever been, thanks to the the appearance of grey and silver hairs. Our hair color often changes and the hair color we get done at the salon may look different than it used too and our stylist may suggest changing our color formula.
So, what is a woman to do? Turning back the clock isn't an option but taking advantage of modern anti-aging technology designed specifically for hair is. One of our favorite product lines showed up on more than one bloggers page as the number one anti-aging haircare product. Alterna's Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Shampoo, asccording to Rank & Style, is the number one anti-aging shampoo. It's also one of GLOSS's client favorites, too. Sulfate free and containing cavair extract which is loaded with omega fatty acids and leaves hair revitalized without weighing it down, Alterna also included ingredients to protect hair from damaging sun rays and color fading, while restoring lost moisture.
What else can you do to protect and improve the integrity of aging hair? A balanced, healthy diet rich in omega fatty acids (salmon, olive oil, almonds), anti-inflammatory fruits and vegetables (cabbage, celery, green tea, blueberries), and plenty of water helps. Creating an optimal environment in which hair can grow is important as well. The addition of stimulating scalp massages with CBD oil or the use of CBD charged products. Not washing your hair as much, using heat and hot tools less frequently, and receiving treatments that prevent split ends and repair the hair has also led to healthier looking hair as well.
